[ She's on the breakfast shift now. Expect Vegemite, thick slabs of bacon, fried tomatoes, and muesli. Also a somewhat eerie blank expression - work like this is really good for letting her turn off her mind. ]

It was me. Um. The kitchen.

I don't know if anyone was caught in the explosion. Or if the people around were OK.

..well. Most of you I wouldn't care much.

[ One of Ellie's main skills is not apologizing.

After a moment, she cuts the feed. ]

[This provokes a widely satisfied grin. Iris likes your style, pissy Aussie girl.]

Right? This is why you never travel without a bag of pear drops. Anyway, I Pied Pipered those buggers right back down the anomaly they come out of. Then we collapsed it by overloading the particle field with the polarity reversed; job done.

[Iris opens her eyes wide, guilelessly innocent.]

Well where the 'eck d'you think they got that line from, Ellie love? I ought to sue for royalties, I should.

[And then she winks.]

Or everyone did. Memes like that 'ave their own power, you know. It's why we 'ave people 'ere that are perfectly real, flesh and blood, that are characters in books and comics and movies on other worlds.

Time travel's a bit like that. There's a theory that by its very nature, time travel were invented at every point in history simultaneously.

...all right, that doesn't quite work out in practise, but the theory's got a kind of truth to it. Every species that's got a stated concept of time passing comes up with the idea, at least.
